Sažetak

German as a language of science is described in this paper. Language has always been very important for science. For a long time, the only languages used in science were Greek, and later on also Latin. German as a language of science became very important in the 19th century. The scientists from the whole world were publishing the results of their investigations in German, and German was taught at many renowned universities in Europe and the USA. The situation changed drastically after the First and Second World War when many scientists went to the USA where they published only in English. However, German is still very important for science as it takes second place (to English) in the number of scientific publications.
