Sažetak

Within the total sum of 40.000 tons of medical waste made in Serbia during one year, there is 8.000 tons of dangerous/infectious medical waste. Until now, all types of medical waste in Serbia were disposed of at the communal waste dumps; namely, according to certain estimates, almost 20 percent of dangerous medical waste was left in ordinary containers. It is clear that we are discussing not only the serious ecological problem, but also the bioethical problem in the broadest sense. In the paper, the author exposes the definition of medical waste, the concept of (integrative) bioethics and the concept of ecological ethics, and finally, the world-wide and regional experiences in medical waste management. Finally, the author points
at the various dimensions of the problem of medical waste treatment in Serbia, and portrays the existing projects related to the solving of the problem of medical waste management.
