In this article we examine one of the steps towards a socially responsible globalization that appears now to be afforded priority attention within the international dialogue. First some of the controversy surrounding the West's concern with human rights is reviewed. Then the most recent contribution to this debate which focuses on social rights is summarised. The EU's contribution to this movement towards globalising social rights is then assessed
