INTERNALIZED PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: CHARACTERISTICS AND PREVENTION POSSIBILITIES

Sažetak
The article deals with internalized problems in children and adolescents, epidemiological data, developmental factors of these disorders, as well as with examples of prevention programmes. International and Croatian epidemiological indicators represent an important guideline for situation analysis and prevention needs assessment. However, due to methodological deficiencies, and the lack of domestic data, a large portion of the epidemiological picture is related to international sources. Only a few internalized problems have been selected related to the severity of clinical picture and the prevalence in the population of children and adolescents: anxiety, depression and suicidality. Special emphasis is put on the prevention programmes based on scientific evidence and indicators, as well as on the need for development of evaluated model programmes in Croatia. The importance of timely, long-term care for mental health in children and adults is also underlined. The article comments on the choice of internationally recognized universal prevention programmes, as well as on selective and indicated prevention model programmes and the possibilities related to the prevention of introversion, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and suicidality. On the basis of the analyzed prevention programmes, practical implications and guidelines for the prevention of internalized disorders in the Croatian context are presented.
