SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SECONDARY-SCHOOL STUDENTS AND SOCIAL DISTANCE TOWARDS NATIONAL AND RELIGIOUS GROUPS

Vlatko Previšić ; Filozofski fakultet, Zagreb

Sažetak

This article was developed as part of the research project "Genealogy
and Transfer of the Intercultural Model". Its aim was
to "capture" the sociodemographic characteristics of secondaryschool
students and their social distance towards national-ethnic
and religious groups, and, furthermore, to indicate, based on these
results, the possibility of implementing intercultural education
into the schooling system. A questionnaire was designed for obtaining
sociodemographic indicators and also a Bogardus-type scale
for measuring social distance. The data were statistically ana-
Iyzed with regard to frequency and percentage distribution. The initial
hypotheses and research problems were presented through
theoretical description, after which the findings were analyzed
and interpreted with the aid of tabular and graphic displays. The
sociodemographic structure and social distance of secondaryschool
students indicate several factors which make intercultural
communication, as well as its presence in the educational and sociocultural
systems, more difficult (than easy). There are several
factors and circumstances which currently condition such a situation
in Croatia: family socialization, xenophobic indoctrination of
the previous social system, the mass media and especially the
act of aggression against the Republic of Croatia.
