Social and Test Anxiety and Self-Efficacy Perception as Predictors of Exam Success

Sažetak

The aim of this study was to unite some dispositional and some situational variables in order to explore which of them contribute more to an explanation of success at exam and to satisfaction with achieved success. Relationships between dispositional (social anxiety, test anxiety as trait and general self-efficacy) and situational variables (test anxiety as state, self-efficacy in test situation and automatic thoughts during the most difficult exam of the year), and objective and subjective outcomes of the exam were tested. The study consisted of three parts; participants were students of first, second and third years of study at the University of Rijeka. Situational variables were more important in explanation of exam success than dispositional ones. Social anxiety and positive/encouraging automatic thoughts were positive predictors of exam success. Situational variables were also significant in explaining satisfaction with success achieved at the exam. The results showed that only positive/encouraging automatic thoughts make a significant independent contribution to explaining satisfaction with success achieved at the exam.
