Sažetak

The paper presents a process of construction and validation of the Emotional Analysis Test (TAE) designed as a performance test and intended to measure a component of emotional intelligence named by Meyer and Salovey (1997, 1999) as the understanding and analysis of emotions. The test consists of 25 items where the subjects are to distinguish "the elements of emotional mixture" in the presented complex emotional state. The results obtained on TAE, one classical test of cognitive abilities and a multidimensional measure of noncognitive factors of emotional intelligence, administered on 228 secondary school students, show that (a) the reliability and homogeneity measures of TAE are of expectable and satisfactory values, (b) according to expectations, the results in TAE are in low but significant correlation with the measure of two traditional cognitive abilities, (c) performance on TAE is unrelated to noncognitive factors of emotional intelligence (d) abilities measured by TAE directly contribute to the explanation of general school achievement, and (e) results on TAE cannot predict self-reported amount of subjects' conflicts within the school environment. It is concluded that TAE probably represents a measure of some of the abilities of emotional intelligence (understanding of emotions?) which should be the subject of further empirical inquiry.
