Strategies of coping with stress and depression in children and adolescents

Anita Vulić-Prtorić

Sažetak

The work presents the results of an investigation carried out with the aim of determining specific coping strategies connected with the appearance of depression in children and adolescents. The sample consisted of 382 5 th to 8 th grade primary school students. Two tests were used: The Stress Coping Scale for Children and Adolescents (Vulić-Prtorić, 2001) and The Depression Scale for Children and Adolescents (Vulić-Prtorić, 2000).

The results show that those subjects with clinically significant symtoms of depression use less efficient copying strategies which eventually increase their depression. Furthermore, sex differences were found in the choice of coping strategies by depressive children: girls are more likely to seek out the support of friends when faced with a stressful situation, while depressive boys tend to aggressively show their troubles and tensions.

The results confirm the theoretical assumptions of developmental psychopathology regarding coping strategies as strong risk factors in the development of depression and gender differences in the ethiopathogenesis of depression. The practical implications of the results were also discussed, particularly treatment schedules for children and adolescents.
