Miljenka Cota Bekavac

Sažetak

Developed critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills are increasingly important in the ever greater demands of the modern way of life and they should be systematically developed as part of the school program. Discussion has been used as a teaching method since ancient times, and over the past hundred years discussion-games have been developed for use in schools, with the aim of developing a variety of abilities and skills in children and young people. The common title for these various forms of educational discussion-game is debate. Although debating, as argumented discussion, is an extremely demanding activity, it is very attractive to young people since it includes play, contact with others, meeting new people, travel, competition ...

The paper describes the possibilities of developing critical thinking, communication and other skills by taking part in educational debates, briefly shows the spread of debating in Croatian schools and some successes of Croatian debaters. It also discusses the importance of the involvement of psychologists and psychology students in the spread of this method of work with children and young people, especially those who are particularly gifted.
