Some General and Family Values in Rural and Urban Settlements

Sažetak
This paper analyses the results of the research on certain general
(social) and family values according to the evaluation of fathers and
mothers of primary school children in post war period in Croatia. Research included 752 married couples from the villages, towns and
cities in Croatia. The paper compares the evaluation of the subjects
within their residence area as well as between different size residence
areas. Results of the research show that subjects, regardless of their
partner role or their area of residence, give more importance to family than to general values. According to evaluation of general values of fathers and mothers, out of the seven offered values »love«
and »honesty«, »loyalty« and »humanity« have the highest position
on the rank list, regardless of their social environment. Data analysis
shows that there are statistically significant differences in the evaluation of value »love« between fathers and mothers as well as
between subjects from different types of settlements. Out of the five
offered family values, values »child« and »family« are positioned
highest on the rank list. The results also show that »marriage« is valued more in villages value than towns, while »partnership« is a value preferred more in towns than in the country. The paper presents results of same indicators of family dynamics, which
demonstrate actual existence of egalitarian value system in families,
in decision-making, in realisation of procedures, which are important
for the family and in the functioning of the family. Traditional family
values are infrequently present in all types of settlements however
their presence is the highest in the country. Values of egalitarian system are recognized as the main guide lines in creating personal and family life.
