Third Season of Archaeological Excavations at the Prečno Pole I Site in Torčec

Sažetak
The Torčec-Prečno Pole 1 archaeological site is situated on the southern side of the large dried-out bed of a meander of the Drava River which extends north of the village of Torčec in Koprivnica-Križevci County. This year’s excavation followed the boundaries of the fields. Its width was 5 m, and its length roughly 40 m, generating a total of 208 m2 of explored area. This excavation site lies south of the excavation conducted in 2005. Only two cultural units were recorded in the layer of hard yellow clay, at a relative depth of approximately 25-30 cm. They consist of a round hearth and the last remains of a probably rectangular structure. In the backfill of the hearth (Fig. 1), itself 25 cm thick, several fragments were found that originated from a brown-dark red vessel with thinner walls, decorated by a wavy single-line pattern on the shoulder and body, three discoid spheres and a larger whetstone. The hearth, 0.98 by 0.80 m, is situated outside of the dwelling. In the second backfill, 36 cm thick, several pottery fragments were discovered which are decorated with a wavy comb-like pattern and bundles of vertical lines, some daub and sandstone, stones from the millstone and a considerable quantity of gravel. With regard to the situation on the entire explored part of the site, this author concluded that these are the remains of a small dwelling, 2.74 by 2.04 m, and that the two cultural backfills can be dated to the Early and High Middle Ages, respectively. A more precise dating of this settlement will be possible only after a scientific analysis of movable archaeological finds.
