Awareness of Self and Others in Social Anxiety and Self-Monitoring: A Contribution to Validation of Social Awareness Inventory (2)

The Social Awareness Inventory (SAI, Sheldon, 1996) is an instrument which allows us to independently assess the degree to which one tends to see his/her own and other's experiences and presentation from our own and other's perspectives. Previous administrations of this instrument showed that these different tendencies are significantly correlated, and that these correlations can be interpreted in terms of two factors, reflecting awareness of oneself as a social object (factor of “divided self” or objective consciousness) and as a knower (the factor of “grounded self” or reflectiveness) (Sheldon, 1996; Ćubela Adorić, 2003). This paper presents the results of a study with a group of high school students which aimed to examine the relations of the SAI scales and factors with the measures of social anxiety (social anxiety scale from SKAD-94; Vulić-Prtorić, 2000) and self-monitoring (Snyder's Self-Monitoring Scale, 1974). Based on the descriptive characteristics of the constructs of social anxiety and self-monitoring, their measures were expected to correlate positively with the SAI scales that define the divided self factor, whereas the SAI scales defining the self-grounded factor were expected to correlate positively with the Self-Monitoring Scale. The results provided support for these expectations. It was also found that in older students social anxiety correlates negatively with the grounded self factor, which is in line with the assumption that this SAI factor represents a manifestation of the self aspect which is in charge of self-regulation (Ćubela Adorić, 2003). The findings regarding Snyder's Self-Monitoring scale support previous observations that this instrument measures two independent factors. Of special interest is our finding that the focal awareness of others is associated with the “public performance” factor on Snyder's scale, whereas the “other-directedness” factor on his scale is related with the focal awareness of oneself from other's perspective.
