Sažetak

Zagreb exhibition of physical plans of the villages in Croatia encompassing the period from the middle of 19th till the middle of 20th century, that was prepared by Jasenka Kranjčević, is an appropriate occasion to point out the problems of Croatia's rural areas
spatial organization and the issues of the renovation of Croatian village. That is just the reason why, after having described the worth
of this exhibition, the author gives the account of the works in the field
of rural sociology and congenial disciplines which have treated these
issues. There are several reasons corroborating the importance of this
problem. In the first place, every physical planning starts from certain
presumptions and from the understanding of space, the activities which would be carried out there and the role of the man. Namely,
the link between the space, the society and the man has a long-term
repercussion on the research and in particular on the way of physical
planning and the spatial organization within the limits of the project
and the developmental strategy of a particular society. And this is even more important because of the fact that Croatia has inherited
the rural space which was neglected, mistreated and destroyed during
the second half of the 20th century. Since the development of society
was submitted to industrialization and modernization, rural space was
treated as its resource and the principle of rurism hadn't been applied
to it. Secondly, in the post-socialist transition the main inherited problems haven't been solved. Thirdly, during the Homeland War rural
space was emptied and devastated. And finally, although the profession has systematically enabled the insight in the state of affairs
and provided foundations for the appropriate policy to be implemented, the policy congruent with the concept of sustainable development, the situation hasn't changed because Croatia doesn't
have the concept and the policy of rural development. The crisis can be resolved by the productive synthesis of the scientific approach and
the profession of physical planning, and through the making and implementation of the appropriate rural policy.
