CONNECTION BETWEEN TEMPERAMENT FEATURES AND READINESS OF CHILDREN TO ATTEND SCHOOL

According to Plomin's model of temperament (EASI), a child's temperament can be measured at four different levels: emotionality, activity, sociability, and impulsiveness. Children of different temperament demand different educational approach in order to be prepared to start school. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to determine the relation between some preschool children's characteristics (which indicate readiness to start elementary school) on one hand, and the temperament characteristics of children attending Dugo Selo Kindergarten on the other (N=66). The analysis of differences in temperament (EASI questionnaire of children's temperament) has shown that among all independent and interactive variables there was only one significant difference in temperament, and it was related to gender variable. Results in Colored Progressive Matrices (CPM) revealed only negative relation with impulsiveness dimension (for girls and for all children together). Results of Loretta Bender test – Developmental Principle of Grading (LB-R) were not significantly negatively correlated with any dimension of temperament. However, the results of Questionnaire of Developmental Problems (URP) were significantly positively correlated with three temperament dimensions: impulsiveness, emotionality, and activity (for boys and all children together). As for the girls, the results of Questionnaire of Developmental Problems were significantly positively correlated only with the activity dimension. These results can present the real situation for the evaluated sample, but they can also be the result of specific meta-evaluation provided by preschool teachers in specific conditions in kindergartens.
