Sažetak

Giulio Camillo Delminio (1479–1544) is a representative of the Neo-Platonist current of Renaissance philosophy with a singular approach to the issue of mnemonics. In his book L’Idea del Theatro (comprising seven sections: The First Grade, The Banquet, The Cave, The Gorgons, Pasiphae, The Sandals of Mercury and Prometheus) Delminio outlines his understanding of theatre as a theatre of memory. Delminio’s theatre was constructed on the basis of astrological understanding of the world and in it is reflected the correspondence between macrocosm and microcosm. Theatre as viewed by Delminio can be considered through two of its functions, either as an assistance to an orator in memorizing and devising speech, along the lines of the classical function of mnemonics within rhetoric, or as a depository of the entire human knowledge of the cosmos and a place of searching for archetypal foundations, through a direct insight into the entirety of the cosmos. The theatre itself is constructed according to the astrological understanding of the cosmos, which is based on the symbolism of the number seven, representing the number of planets and the number of celestial spheres, but is at the same time also connected to the seven days of the creation of the world.
