Sažetak

The legacy of Croatian composer and organist Franjo Dugan Sr. kept in the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb contains his review of Josip Andreis’s manuscript Pregled povijesti muzike (Povijest muzike) [Survey of the History of Music (History of Music)], which Dugan Sr. sent to the publisher of the book, Matica hrvatska [Matrix Croatica], under Matrix’s memo/invitation of 16 February 1939. In his evaluation, which was completed on 25 April 1939, Dugan Sr. focused mainly on the textual parts of Andreis’s book, where he was able to display his competence in the field of music theory and harmony, knowledge of instruments, the issues on musical forms, terminological questions, and music-historical contents and in understanding music literature. The manuscript that Dugan received to evaluate consisted of 31 volumes, because the 30th volume was followed by "Dodatak (muz. znanost)" [Anex (mus. science)]. The comparison of the manuscript of Dugan’s review with Andeis’s published work shows that Andreis slightly summarized his initial manuscript to 29 volumes/chapters in printed, the final form of his book (with the last chapter "XXIX. Hrvati" [XXIX. Croats]) followed by "Dodatak. Glazba kao znanost i reproduktivna umjetnost" [Supplement. Music as Science and Performing Art]. In other words, until the final formation of that voluminous work the number of the chapters/volumes/units had been changing according certainly to both the notes of the reviewers (Franjo Dugan Senior, Božidar Širola and Zlatko Grgošević) and/or the author’s concepts, the evidence of which was given subsequently in the evaluations and reviews (11) that followed immediately after the printed publication.
Dugan made some more or less extensive remarks on the majority of volumes in Andreis’s manuscript, while he did not comment at all on some chapters. His remarks were noted precisely, denoting particular points in order by volume (Roman numerals) and by page (Arabic numerals), according to Andreis’s manuscript. Comparative analysis of Dugan’s review and Andreis’s book content showed what notes, remarks, suggested additions, and changes and amplifications were accepted by Andreis and included in the book manuscript, changing and completing his text of its final version.
This Dugan text has been unknown to date and has not been mentioned previously. It is introduced here for the first time in its original form and in full. This allows monitoring of its contents and of all the notes, corrections and amplifications in the author’s hand.
