NITRATE DIRECTIVE AND AGIRCULTURAL PRODUCTION IN VARAŽDIN COUNTY

Sažetak
In Varaždin County there are a large number of family farms which still have not solved the problem of farmyard manure disposal adequately. On average, 78% of farms in Croatia do not have adequate space for farmyard manure. Besides polluting the environment because of constant percolation, many farmers are not aware of the economic loss which occurs for this reason. Due to inadequate storage of farmyard manure, there is an annual loss of approximately 35 EUR in nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus per a livestock unit. On the basis of the number of livestock units in Varaždin County, the loss amounts to 2.040.955 EUR a year. Especially noticeable is the problem of storage of chicken manure produced by poultry farms. This production has been continually present for more than 50 years. Almost the entire livestock production of Varaždin County is concentrated in the lowland area along the main watercourses below which is an aquifer. The county has increasingly focused on the state of the environment, so the protection of the environment has moved from declaratively expressed concern to activities and improvements which require significant financial resources and investments. For these reasons the county has included the financing of project documentation for new cattle farms in its programmes. It reserves the right to condition the construction of adequate reservoirs for the manure from these farms. This way the constructions which are potential sources of pollution cease to be so. Through various programmes and projects Varaždin County attempts to enable family farms to adapt more easily to the implementation of the Nitrates Directive in practice.
