Sažetak

History has quickly shown that a holiday isn't only a religious experience but also a secular one. We are witnessing, therefore, a perceptible secularistion of festivities. This could be seen in the development of the mediaeval liturgical drama, carnivals and the so-called fools' holidays. During the Renaissance and in bourgeois society the holiday has been transformed into free time, the time for leisure. In recent times a festivity has become commercialised and began to disappear. A feast was once the source ofjoy; nowadays it is money which dominates human plays and games. Because man is by nature a being of holidays he tried to use secular festivities for religious aims. Many secular feasts have been given a religious connotation: we have, as a result, political, consumer and contestatory holidays. However, since the sacred does not belong to this world, these festivities have ended up as unexpected explosions of terror or as an impatient search for mystical rituals in new religious movements.
