Célébration of the Sacred — Holidays in Folk Religion

Sažetak
It looked as if under the impact of general secularisation all festivities and mass church celebrations would disappear in society. But in recent times the interest for such celebrations has increased which is manifested not only in popular circles but also among scientists and men of letters. Mainly responsible for this is a revival of the need for the sacred. We can approach holidays in two ways; first as a social fact which speeds up the process of socialisation and softens the negative effect of the economic life. Secondly, as a religious fact which, by abolishing the secular time, offers the possibility to grasp at least for a moment the mythical significance of the origin. A holiday, consequently, makes the sacred capable of being present to and experienced by the fallen and sinful man. Above that one cannot go. In celebration we meet some radical attitudes, such as spending, squandering, destruction, infringement of prohibitions, which cause extremes in actions. At the end of that road one usually encounters death as the ultimate expression of sacral celebrations in the personal life and the end of the world as the acme of the celebration of the sacred in cosmic dimensions. This is the reason why death and the doomsday are two greatest holidays in the life of humankind.
