In “The European Union and Southeastern Europe: troubled Waters Ahead?” prof. Inotai analyzes the relationship between the expanding European Union and the countries of Southeastern Europe (including Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro). Primary focus is on economic issues, strategic importance in the short to medium term. However, although it has a clear economic focus, this study has an interdisciplinary character. Non-economic issues are also studied, such as regional cooperation in migration, ethnic issues, and the aftermath of war. Seven chapters analyze relations between the individual countries of Southeastern Europe and European Union, the influence of non-EU international actors, the economic development and adjustment of Western Balkan countries to European Union norms and conditionalities. This study is based on se several background documents (paper prepared by Institute for World Economics in 2005 dealing with the economic issues of the countries belonging to the Southeastern Europe region, materials from the European Commission and Stability Pact). This study shows us how complex and important is relationship between the expanding EU and Southeastern countries. It contributes to the better understanding of dilemmas, tasks and problems witch the new countries and EU are dealing with, giving the recommendations at the same time.
