The process of building neoclassical portals in the agrarian park of the Garagnin family in Trogir

Today’s Garagnin – Fanfogna gardens in Trogir originate from the agrarian park of the Garagnin family which was made at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. Regarding the fact that it was originally made both for its aesthetics and practicality, it had two entrances from the south side: the representative and the economic portal. Both of them give us both a symbolic and specific unusual synthesis of the characteristics of this garden, which is, along with the presence of exotic and decorative plants, based on a practical plantation crisscrossed with park-like paths, surrounded by outstanding architecture and ancient lapidaries. This paper, through the trails of new documents and through further analysis of already known documents, reconstructs the process of the performance of masonry works on portals, as well as the works on the whole main façade of the garden’s parcel made by master Giuseppe Bonomi. The Garagnin brothers made two contracts for these works with master Bonomi, the first one in May of 1810 and the other one in July of 1812. Besides the detailed description of the works for the portal’s elements, accompanying buildings and the cover for the fencing wall, they also give insight into which quarries were used at the time, the ways in which materials were purchased and transported, the prices and closing dates for the building. The information about closing dates for the works is also confirmed by data from the family expense books. The making of the entry façade of the Garagnin gardens becomes even more significant with the fact that it is just one amid a whole string of other excellent projects made by order of the Garagnin family during the neoclassical period. Nowadays, the garden has been neglected, but we are aware of its significance and the importance of its revitalization. Recent archival research gave us additional information about building processes at the beginning of the 19th century, and at the same time, brought us closer to the atmosphere of the time which is the precondition for a quality restoration.
