Sažetak
Systematic archaeological excavations at the Suhopolje–Kliškovac site in 2009 were the fifth season of excavations, which began in 2005. The 2009 excavations began on 1st June and lasted until 17th June. As in the previous years, they were financed within the scientific project of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport (project 197-1970677-0676) called Croatia’s Medieval Archaeological Heritage (5th – 17th centuries), led by Professor Željko Tomičić, PhD. Financial support came also from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts Foundation.
In the previous year, four quadrants L/M 4/5 had been excavated, lying north of the railway. Because of more modest financial means, this year a smaller surface was opened, i.e. only its part along the railway that had been excavated in 2006 and 2007. The intention was to excavate the oldest graves in quadrant L 4 and to try to finalize the excavations of that quadrant, and to scrutinize quadrant M 4. This was carried out successfully, since quadrant L 4 and the western part of quadrant M 4 had been dug all the way to sterile soil, and the architecture was completely defined, including the bottom of the foundations. A total of 56 graves were excavated, the faces of the walls were documented, the continuation of wall SU 106 was unearthed, and quadrant L 4 was fully excavated. Among 21 finds, pottery finds found in the grave fills prevail. These are tiny fragments of mediaeval pottery. Also found were 6 special grave finds. Ring SF 65 from grave 77 (Fig. 3) stands out, which is similar to ring SF 55 found in 2008 in grave 80. It is the ring type that was probably developed from the Bijelo brdo ring type 38b. Another ring, SF 68, was found in grave 122. It is a bronze ring with a D cross-section. Apart from the C14 analyses conducted earlier, further 6 samples of bones – some from this year, and others from the previous years – were sent for analysis in order to define burial horizons of this mediaeval cemetery with certainty.
