Torčec-Cirkvišče, Archaeological Excavations in 2009

Sažetak

In the period from 13th October until 21st October 2009 the Institute of Archaeology from Zagreb conducted field excavations on the site Torčec-Cirkvišče. The excavations are a follow-up of the trial excavations of 2002. The coordinate system set back in 2002 was acknowledged and a part of trench (□ I 10 and eastern part □ H 10) excavated at that time was uncovered again in order to excavate it down to sterile soil. In the course of the excavations, 36 new graves were documented, out of which 34 were examined. New era burials prevail, and only several graves could be dated in the Late Middle Ages. The skeletons in all the graves were laid on their backs in a stretched posture and oriented west–east, with heads to the west. Standing out with its rich finds is particularly grave 47. This is a grave of a younger lady, in which almost entirely preserved woman’s headdress (parta), a belt buckle, clothes buckles, a ring and a fragment of a decorative artefact were found. Since it cut through three older graves, while it remained completely preserved, the grave can be dated in the last stage of the existence of cemeteries at the Torčec-Cirkvišče site.
