Sažetak

The spreading of traffic network and water-ways enabled Slavonia goods and passenger traffic in north-south and east-west directions and therefore set infrastructural foundations for creating a unique and powerful economic area and preconditions for greater progress of economic branches. In this regard the Drava was important as the main water-way for goods traffic due to then poorly-constructed roads so that special emphasis was placed on river regulation and better inland navigation, which gradually meant that the Drava, since the first half of the 19th century onward, represented a river crossroads – a water-way, one of the most important in the Danube basin. It became the centre of intermediary trading, which meant that the river navigability, among other factors, improved the status of Osijek as a significant trading, industrial and banking centre.
