Call for papers: Special Issue - Kant
Kant's moral philosophy has withstood the test of time for centuries, and its interest and significance have not diminished even 300 years after his birth. Kant's ideas of autonomy, dignity, and universality serve as the foundations upon which a significant portion of Western moral philosophy is built. Their importance extends into the realms of politics and law, shaping the world we live in today. However, despite the comprehensive and holistic approach characterizing Kant's philosophical thought, these concepts are often used within specific scientific disciplines or philosophical branches, rather than serving as bridges that connect different disciplines.
The special issue of the journal Jahr - European Journal of Bioethics focuses precisely on the connections that unite Kant's philosophical thought. It explores how concepts and ideas from Kant's political and legal philosophy can be applied in the broad and interdisciplinary field of bioethics. The goal of this special issue is to provide insight into the development of previous discussions relying on Kant's political and legal thought and to examine how these discussions can enrich research in medical and environmental ethics, public health ethics and ethics of research, as well as reproductive ethics, neuroethics and theories of social justice.
The journal welcomes both theory-driven submissions as well as those that deal with the application of Kant's philosophy in political and legal practice related to bioethical topics. Additionally, the journal is open to original research papers and review articles, which can be written in Croatian or English.
Some of the topics that the special issue of the journal aims to cover include:
- Kant's idea of autonomy and its application to the notion of informed consent in medicine.
- Contemporary interpretations and applications of Kant's views on euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide in legislation, public policies, and medical practice.
- Kant's ideas of autonomy and dignity in the context of biological and mechanical enhancement of humans, with an emphasis on genetic enhancement or mechanical brain implants.
- Reproductive rights, parenthood, and Kant's views on informed consent, duties towards future generations, and the obligations and rights of individuals in relation to the community.
- Distribution of resources in a public healthcare system, with a focus on how Kantian ethics determines the right to healthcare, duties related to these rights, and the role of the free market.
- Pandemics and the restriction of human rights based on the duty to protect the health, dignity, and autonomy of other citizens.
- Communication of scientific research results (especially in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic) and Kant's perfect duty of truthfulness, with a focus on ideas of transparency and honesty on one hand, and well-intentioned manipulation and protection of others on the other hand.
