The goal of the research was to examine a self assessment of motivation for behavioural change in persons with an addiction problem. Eight persons with addiction problems participated in interviews in the therapeutic program of the Cenacolo community and Clinic for Psychiatry Vrapče. Data were analysed with thematic analysis. The results show that the most important motivation for inclusion in the program both in the therapeutic community Cenacolo and Clinic for Psychiatry Vrapče was the support from the close persons, problems in everyday functioning, and the decision supported by the important persons. The motivation for behavioural change during the treatment of participants in the therapeutic community Cenacolo and Clinic for Psychiatry Vrapče was different. Religiosity and spirituality are the most important for participants in the therapeutic community Cenacolo, while group support was crucial for the participants in the Clinic for Psychiatry Vrapče. The difference was also visible in reflections about the motives for abstinence. For the participants of the therapeutic community Cenacolo, the motive for abstinence is in prayer, while the participants of the Clinic for Psychiatry Vrapče see the motivation in important life changes.
