Abstract

The definition of function of seismic energy attenuation has important influence on the seismic design parameters. Empirical attenuation functions of acceleration or the intensity of earthquakes, which are often applied in Yugoslavia, have the same shortcoming that they have all been defined on the basis of data from another area. Macroseismic data for the period from 1901 – 1980 made possible the definition of functions of intensity attenuation of earthquakes from the NW part of Yugoslavia. On the other hand, the registration of the accelerograph network in the period from 1973 – 1981 made possible the definition of attenuation acceleration functions for the area of Yugoslavia and the northern part of Italy. The relationship between the attenuation functions of acceleration and the intensity of earthquakes points to the possibility of using macroseismic data together with accelerograms when defining the function of attenuation of seismic energy.
