Abstract

The author analyzes and presents the beadles of the University of Zagreb from 1875 to the present day on the basis of university archives, university press and relevant literature. These are university administrative officials whose role was unavoidable during university ceremonies such as the inauguration of the new rector and doctoral promotion. The paper considers their position and work at the University of Zagreb. They took care of the maintenance of the University building and supervised the servants. They received and issued all cash and paper mail, student mail, and provided information. During the solemn ceremonies, the beadle led the processions carrying the rector’s scepter, which represents the university’s insignia. When participating in university ceremonies, the beadle wore a formal uniform. Before starting official duties, he had to sign an oath of loyalty to the ruler and that he would be a diligent, good and valuable official. After the Second World War, the position of beadle is no longer mentioned in the statutes of the University of Zagreb. On average, the beadle duty lasted about 20 years.
Today, the university beadle has a ceremonial duty during participation in university ceremonies
such as the inauguration of the new rector, the promotion of honorary doctorates, and the
promotion of the Doctor of Science and Arts of the University of Zagreb.
