Sažetak

Nicknames are included in human relations. They are a part of the language culture in behaviour - talking to someone -- and they adjust the usage of conventional stereotypic formula, and also make possible the most effective mutual communication. Being a part of the language subsystem they are also a part of the language culture and the same legality is applied to them as for the language in relation toward the culture in general.
The topic of our research is how do nicknames reveal the picture of the world in Mraclin (Turopolje) from the end of the 19th century till today; how they mark occurrences, re-estab¬lishing values, behaviour and other. Mraclin was, in the time when "old" nicknames originated, the very enclosed environment with a long history (the beginnings in the 13th century), having a strictly re-established system of values and regulating the influence of foreign elements.
The seventies in this century brought changes. The young reject the old values seeking for the new ones, accepting Anglicisms and the influence of the western culture and subculture. The way of earning and the life style are changing. The old people still keep in mind, like a treasury, the reality which the language expressed and maintained. We cannot stop the course of history, but we can regain consciousness of old values by researching and wishing that they, as a tradi¬tion ~ remembrance on something that is our own — can be rebuilt into the new world.
