Abstract

This work presents the theology of the holy mystery of εύχέλαιον
(the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick) in the Orthodox
Church, starting from the necessity of better understanding of the
theology of holy mysteries in the East. In the introductory part the
theme is placed in the contemporary context of ecumenism. Then,
the author presents the theology of the holy mystery of euxelaion
in the eschatological perspective to which each illness leads, and
the relation between the Sacrament of Penance and the Anointing of the Sick. Then the work treats the dogmatic questions on the
institution of the holy mystery, the structure of the sacramental
act and the effects of the holy mystery. There is also a reference
to the ministers and receivers. The work finishes with questioning
the possibilities of mutual administering and receiving of this holy
mystery on the basis of legal regulations of the Catholic Church
and the attitude of the Orthodox Churches, and, finally, suggests
possible improvements in pastoral practice.
