What Newspapers Reported? Content Analysis of Newspaper Headlines (January – June 2011)

Sažetak
The following six daily national newspapers were analysed by content analysis
method: Jutarnji list, Večernji list, 24 sata, Vjesnik, Slobodna Dalmacija and Novi
list. Research included the front cover pages of above mentioned newspapers in
the period of six months, from 1st January 2011 until 30th July 2011, which totals to
1014 reviewed and analysed newspaper front covers.
The aim of this research is to compare basic characteristics of reviewed press media,
i.e. throughout the analysis of their media production to establish common similarities
and differences. In media content analysis the most frequently used method is
quantitative content analysis. This is the method in which an objective, quantitative
and justified description of content is given and by which adequate connections and
relationships between phenomenons in dataset are presented. Using the analytical
matrix with 16 categories for classification we tried to determent, in most precise
way, the criteria for this content analysis of newspaper cover pages.
From the media point of view, the selection of themes represents the hierarchically
structured selection of events that have related significance and on which basis media
space or time and specific position is given to them. In the first phase of research
we established hypothesis that gave grounds for determination of similarities and
differences in the newspapers that were subject of analysis.
This study should give other researchers incentive to work on media monitoring
which is the only justified way to be critical towards the media content. The direction
of pursuing this research is to include local newspaper media, followed by
electronic media, so that in the final phase gathered data can be analysed and compared
on several levels with the goal of constructing complete image of media editing
policy in Croatia.
