Gingival Recession in Relation to Occlusal Disturbances

Sažetak

Defining the cause of gingival recession is often a troubling task, since this finding has a number of possible factors that very often work synergistically during development of recession. Premature contacts, indirect trauma, malposition of teeth, improper brushing habit are just some of the possible causes of gingival recession. An attempt was made to ascertain isolated gingival recession of intercanine segment of the mouth in a sample consisting of 149 subjects. Standard periodontal charting was used for measurement of gingival recession greater than 3 millimeters in the apico-coronal dimension. Premature contacts were determined by means of clinical analysis according to Sychu- gova. Deviations of dental arches (variation of number, shape and position of teeth) were done during status assessment, while tension test was performed as described by Kopczyk and Saxe. Despite the great number of subjects we were not able to establish a significant correlation between gingival recession and etiologic factors. The recession was most frequently observed above the lower central incisor, and it measured 4 and 5 millimeters. Although we did not confirm correlation between ginigival recession and the etiologic factors by statistical analysis, we do consider that further research of this finding should be performed in order to reveal the gingival recession, since its therapy presents a great challenge in modern dentistry.
