Sažetak

The paranasal sinus mucoceles are epithelized cysts containing fluid, and their etiology
is still under debate. Several hypotheses have been proposed such as pressure induced
osteolysis, chronic inflammation and bacterial infection. The results of exact laboratory essays
showed that paranasal mucocele wall and fluid contain inflammatory mediators with important
role in the first line anti-bacterial defence. Mucoceles are very rare in children. It has
been suggested that pediatric mucoceles occur predominantly in patients with cystic fibrosis,
as results of gene mutation. The role of previous surgical treatment in development of socalled
secondary mucoceles has been discussed in this review article.
