Abstract

A traditional concept of five venereal diseases has been extended to a list of 15 diseases. Each of these diseases is described (etiology, clinical picture and differential diagnosis). Over the past 30 years, the proportion of sexually transmitted diseases in the overall morbidity has dramatically increased. These diseases can also have oral symptomatology. As a dental doctor may thus be one of those who will first suspect the possible disease, he should be familiar with the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of the sexually transmitted diseases. He is also exposed to a professional risk of infection by a non-venereal route. The importance of proper education, preventive measures, health standards and health professional conscience for self-protection and prevention of disease transmission to other patients is emphasized.
