This academic year represents also the very beginnings of the post of a career advisor at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. My aim is thus to present the key competencies of an advisor for the adult students in the process of education. The tasks are defined mainly as helping adult students to decide for their studies and realize their career objectives and personal development as well as offering help and support with their lifelong learning and establishing contacts between the students themselves and their potential employers. All this would facilitate employment of graduates. To perform the tasks, a career advisor needs not only a suitable formal education but must also be an expert on career theories and professional legislation and labour market, study programmes and employment opportunities. A thorough insight in the distinctive features of focus groups, individual and group counselling, specialised skills in adult education and capability of adapting the process of teaching to adult students, their needs in different circumstances and under various influences are of fundamental importance. A career advisor is above all a moral character.
