Sažetak

In the article 844 (442-Mi and 402-M2) mandibular molars were examined in order to analyse the morphological variation in root shape and number with a special stress on splitting and fusion at the apex. M2 as a genetically stable tooth has mostly two roots (87.33%) with a small number of teeth showing splitting at the apex (8.82%). M2 as a genetically unstable tooth is liable to the variation in the root number and shape. The occurence of root fusion (6.47%), apex splitting (3.73%) and total root splitting, creating three (0.75%) and four (0.25%) rooted teeth was observed. This could be connected with the disharmony between the tooth eruption and growth of mandible during the development of oral structures.
