Sažetak

An investigation of morphological characteristics of root resorption was conducted on 161 single root and 19 multiroot extraced persistent deciduous teeth. The stage of resorption, location, microscopic appearance of resorption area and conditions under which the resorption process developed were determined on each tooth. In the single root teeth, the resorption process involved the apical portion of the root, changing its normal configuration in six different ways. Resorption changes in the majority of teeth were found on the root surface which manifested in different ways according to the macroscopic appearance and location. Considering the conditions under which resorption evolved, lateral root resorption if it developed spontaneously, (i.e. outside the X -ray verified influence of the developing permanent tooth), was absent in the majority of teeth. A similar mode of resorption in multirooted teeth, which occurred spontaneously in all samples, was also observed. Resorption was always found in the bifurcation area and then advanced to the interradicular wall towards the tips of the roots. The resorption area appeared concave macroscopically.
