Abstract

The new concept of using adhesion in restorative dentistry is discussed. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the importance of mechanically preparing the enamel surface before etching and to register the effects of etching. In vitro etching was performed with 39% phosphoric acid on cleaned and uncleaned enamel surfaces. Two groups of 20 specimens here investigated ultramicroscopically under a magnification of up to 2000 X . Where was a significant difference in the appearance of the etched surface enamel after all debris was removed. The authors conclude that mechanical preparation is important before etching to achieve better micro-retention for a filling with composite material.
