Abstract

The use of high-attraction magnetic alloys as a means of retention has recently been on an increase. Fof this purpose, a device for the dental magnet retention determination has been developed. This device allows the magnet attraction, with or without the presence of lateral forces, to be measured. Attraction force valaues of the magnets of any size and of magnetic alloys used in mobile prosthodontics, orthodontics, and oral and dentofacial surgery (Behrman1, Cerny2), can thus be asseassed. Magnetic dynamometer allows retention between two permanent magnets to be determined and precisely assessed for different relative distances and positions. All the parts of the device exept spiral coiIs are made of a non-ferromagnetic material to avoid any disturbances during measurements. The results obtained in the study of dental magnet retention have revealed the highest magnetic power without any lateral force influence to be 157.9, 117.1 and 211.4 ponds for distances od 1, 1.6 and 0.4 mm, respectively. Maximal force between two dental SmC05 magnets amounts to 373 ponds at the distance of 0.4 mm and with magnet dimension of 6/3x7.1/3 mm.
