Abstract

The main characteristics of the speech at Privlaka near the island Vir in the northwest of Zadar are presented. The main attention is paid to the phonologic characteristics, primarily the accentuation. The old chakavian traits have been numerously preserved while the dominant immigrants’ ones have new štokavian characteristics. The Privlaka speech is placed within the context of the southeastern chakavian and the neighbouring štokavian idiom.
