Abstract
Previously unknown frescoes were recently discovered in the Collegiate Church (S. Maria de Fulmine) in Kotor: Christ the Almighty in the cupola, several scenes of the Passion in the apse, a row of standing figures on the western wall and the Marriage in Cana in the upper zone of the west bay. The author links the iconographic schemes of the frescoes with the Byzantine tradition of the so-called Palaeologan Renaissance, drawing parallels with several buildings in Greece and Macedonia which have frescoes by artists from Thessaloniki. The date of these frescoes is set around 1320. Their execution is ascribed to Manoylo whose signature can be seen in the Greek inscription on the sword of the angel Gabriel. The same Greek artist is mentioned in 14th century archive documents from Kotor and was of numerous »pictores graeci« working in Kotor and in other eastern Adriatic towns at this time. His art brings together Byzantine and Gothic characteristics many of which can be found in the S. Maria Collegiata frescoes.
