Abstract
The authors present overview of late antique graves found during the archaeological research from 1999 to 2007. Thirty graves were found in that period. Most burials were located in front of the western and northern megalithic wall. Deceased persons were buried in the period from the 4th to the end of the 6th centuries which is evident from horizontal stratigraphy and finds in graves. Following types of graves were recorded on the necropolis: inhumation graves under tegulae, graves in amphorae, vaulted tombs and the largest group with walled tombs and burials within stone slabs. Graves 21 and 29 found in front of the northern wall are particularly significant as they offer important chronological information for the last building phase of the late antique fortification system. Furthermore presence of vaulted tomb 29 indicates existence of an early Christian church of cemeterial character in immediate vicinity. Finds, though scarce, represent important contribution to dating and understanding of ethnic affiliation of the inhabitants of Asseria.
