Abstract

In today's society, it is necessary to devote particular attention to an integrated education in the culture as well as the promotion of schools that educate students in values. In order to clarify this initial concept, the author refers to the classical paideia and its influence upon the scholastic model in the West. From the beginning, Christianity has developed a specific "Christian paideia" and a new cultural and educational model. Today, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, it is necessary to redefine educational goals in order to establish a balance between personal education and the acquiring of encyclopedic knowledge. It is worthwhile to link the family, teachers and cultural institutions, bearing in mind the social role of education, and the educator should teach students how to analyze the society and culture. The Catholic school, as an educational institution, is urged to foster cooperation between the school and new cultural factors. Definition of the role of the school includes the relationships of the school and education, the school and society, and the school and evangelization. Today's proposal for Salesian schools was originally determined by Don Bosco's educational system. It is worthwhile to recall Don Bosco's motto of "an honest citizen and a good Christian" for the educational environment of the twenty-first century and the building of a better future for all.
