The ecological consciousness of the inhabitants of Novi Sad about the village, agriculture and food
Miloš Marjanović
Sažetak
This article is part of a wider research
project into the ecological consciousness of
the inhabitants of Novi Sad. The results
were interpreted in comparison with those
of a monographic study of the Vojvodina
village of Conoplja, in which ecological
problems have been "crystallized" in their
natural and social environment, and some
research into ecological consciousness in
Croatia.
The inhabitants of Novi Sad think that the
village still has ecological advantages
over the town, although they agree that
pollution in the village is increasing. They
consider that pollution decreases going
from city centres and the industry towards
the rural environs, but their insight into
those zones decreases in the same
direction. However, it seems that certain
forms of pollution (waste disposal,
groundwater pollution) are even greater in
the village than in the town. Chemical
agents used in agriculture are a very
important polluter and the inhabitants of
Novi Sad support greater food control and
the greater use of biomass as an every
source. However, they are not sufficiently
conscious that the areas of fertile land in
Vojvodina, which are its most important
natural resource, have drastically
decreased from year to year. Most of them
are pessimistic regarding the solution of
the world demographic/food problems.
The inhabitants of Novi Sad, especially the
younger and more educated ones, have an
attitude that shows a very
highly-developed ecological consciousness,
but this consciousness is based on
uncritical anthropecentrism and
insufficient ecological information and
education.
