Is „Intangible Cultural Heritage” Derived from European Exoticism?

Sažetak
The paper deals with the emergence of the concept of „intangible cultural heritage” in Japan, from which it spread throughout the world. The author explores the roots of the concept and its relationship to European academic traditions resulting in the scientific interest in cultural heritage and traditional culture. The turning point was the nomination of the Great Shrine of Ise to the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with the thus inspired review of meanings and authenticity criteria of the cultural goods. These are the reasons why this example has been closely scrutinized, together with the re-aesthetization of the restoration tradition of the shrine, which made its nomination to the List possible. Analysis of the initial concept directs our attention towards creative skills and capabilities, observable in the relationship with global interactions and exchange of goods on the market.
