Abstract

With his work and his activities, Branko Gavella, actor, translator, director, and theatre pedagogue, left an indelible mark on the development of Croatian theatre and theatre in general. His name was a synonym for a life completely dedicated to the theater and he represented the criterion for everyone else engaged in that field. He worked in many various environments, from Belgrade and Zagreb, to Novi Sad and Osijek, Ljubljana, Sarajevo and elsewhere, not to mention his activities abroad.
In this paper, we reflect on Gavella’s connections with Split, that is to say, on the reception of the plays that he directed and played on the Split stage. Although not great in number, they are still very significant, especially because some of his directions represented not only specific dates in the cultural life of Split and Split’s theater, but also the development of Croatian theater in general.
