Abstract
The development of national identity in the East Slav population of Galicia, which calls itself Ruthenians and that appeared in Austrian statistics as Ruthenen (Russinnen) оdеr Кlein-Russen, attracted in the 19th century the careful attention of various external forces, among them Vienna, Peterburg, the Vatican, the Poles and the Ukrainophiles of the south-west region of Russia. It was precisely the struggle between these forces that to а great degree determined the victory of the Ukrainian identity over other variants.
