Abstract

This article is an attempt to identify some current problems of preserving and developing ethnic identity, as part of overall cultural identity, from the aspect of language, as one of the crucial factors of ethnic identity, and the language situation, mainly characterized by bilinguality in all classes of the Croatian national minority in Hungary. Special attention is paid to the problem of duality within the mother tongue from the aspect of its standard and dialect form, and connected to that the efficiency of teaching the mother tongue in pre-school institutions and in schools. Using an ethnolinguistic and sociolinguistic approach, research results are placed in a wider social and cultural context.
