Sažetak

It is known that weather and climate conditions greatly affect the frequency and fire behavior of plants and, therefore, the size of the burned area. Therefore, in most countries that threaten fires using various meteorological indices that point to the weather, but climate and opportunities particularly dangerous for the emergence and spread of fire vegetation. In Croatia, for decades used meteorological index of the risk for the occurrence and spread of fire by the Canadian method (Fire Weather Index - FWI), which contains an air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall.
However, scientists and experts that deal with fire vegetation is known that the fire behavior affects the stability of the atmosphere and that is in a dry and unstable atmosphere fires behave abnormally. As a quantitative measure of the instability of the atmosphere used Haines Index. This paper shows how the Haines index behaves in the Adriatic where vegetation fires and the most common and severe, and can be used as an additional tool for the issuance of special warnings on weather conditions especially suitable for extreme fire behavior. He also made meteorological analysis of a fire in Istria in 2012 on whose behavior is most affected by instability in the dry air in the area affected by fire.
