Abstract

During 17th and 18th centuries church composers replaced the former organic development of mass musical structure by the reflection of stylistic and formal changes taken from other genres of music. The result of this replacement was the structural and stylistic heterogeneity of Solemn Mass, which was firmly establis
hed in the beginning of 18th century and remained almost until the end of 19. century. The setting of the text of Ordinary of the mass in »Missa St. Floriani in D« by Leopold Ferdinand Schwerdt (Weizendorf, cca. 1770 — Ljubljana, 1854), probably composed between 1807 and 1809, was done in baroque style. The treatment of individual instruments in an orchestra, the use of thorough bass, tone-painting and dependance of the structural order of individual movements on the baroque way of divading the mass text are all traces of Baroque which can be seen inside other wise classical structure of Schwerdt's musical language.
